Healthgrades Reveals Top U.S. Hospitals for Patient Safety in 2024

Every spring, Healthgrades recognizes hospitals that outperform their peers across 13 patient safety indicators (PSIs) as recipients of the Patient Safety Excellence Award™. This year’s honorees include an elite group of hospitals across 44 states, representing the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety. This award is a recognition of the outstanding care these organizations provide and a much-needed resource for consumers as they navigate their healthcare choices. 

Patient safety is declining nationally

Ensuring consumers have access to clear and comprehensive safety ratings has never been more important. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that the gap between the nation’s highest- and lowest-performing hospitals is growing, and patients treated at hospitals achieving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award are more likely to experience a positive health outcome than patients treated at hospitals that did not receive the award. In fact, from 2020 to 2022, patients treated at recipient hospitals had a significantly lower chance of experiencing one or more of the four leading adverse safety events:*

• In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (51% less likely)
• Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (56% less likely)
• Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (67% less likely)
• Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (71% less likely)

Where you’re treated matters, which is why outcomes-based measures of clinical performance have become a valuable resource for consumers looking to make informed decisions about their healthcare.  

Hospital quality is increasingly important for consumers

As clinical outcomes vary significantly from hospital to hospital, more consumers recognize the critical role quality awards play in helping them find top-rated care. Quality achievements like the Patient Safety Excellence Award alert consumers to an organization’s dedication to safety and inspire peace of mind throughout the care journey; 80% of American healthcare shoppers report feeling more confident in their decision to seek care at a facility with a quality award.
